Hoarding disorder is a complex disorder that affects an estimated 1 in 20 households and is not quickly recognised or diagnosed here in New Zealand. It is recognised as a diagnosable and treatable behavioral mental health condition. Hoarding disorder is often associated with other mental health conditions; Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Depression, ADHD or Social Anxiety Disorder. *Hoarding Disorder is present when the following criteria are met 1. Persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions, regardless of their actual value. 2. Then difficulty is due to a perceived need to save the items and distress associated with discarding them. 3. The Symptoms result in the accumulation of possessions that congest and clutter active living areas and substantially compromise their intended use. 4. The hoarding causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning
